Two Putnam County men who fought with a deputy have been charged with attempted murder after the deputy's gun misfired when one of the men pointed it at him and pulled the trigger, authorities said.

Jorge Luis Santiago-Rodriguez, 19, and Kenny Alberto Cruz-Rodriguez, 22, were charged after they were captured following a parking lot fight with Deputy Kevin Corbin, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

About 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Corbin and his wife arrived at an East Palatka Kangaroo convenience store, where several men were fighting. Corbin broke the fight up, and some of the participants left.

Santiago-Rodriguez and Cruz-Rodriguez turned on Corbin and began a fight, during which Corbin pulled his gun and fired twice at the men but missed. The men continued to fight with Corbin. One grabbed the gun, pointed it at Corbin's chest and pulled the trigger twice, but it did not fire, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Corbin's wife had called 911, and the men rode off on bicycles as they heard police sirens. They were found and arrested.

It was not immediately known why the gun misfired.

Corbin was cut above the eye, lost a tooth and might require oral surgery. He was treated and released from the hospital and is on administrative leave, which is typical in such cases.
